Rachel, a model from Austin, was the very first portrait client at my new photo studio! We took some great natural light head shots and then moved outside for a mini session.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing Ben, Esther, and Eric both in my Austin, Texas based studio and around the shops of South Congress Ave. The shoot ran the full gamut of styles covering formal wear, traditional Korean Hanboks, and casual clothing out on the streets.

Ben, the smallest and most energetic member of the family, was definitely the star of the shoot. He was a natural in front of the camera! My favorite part of the shoot was taking environmental portraits of him outside on South Congress and eventually landing at Home Slice Pizza for a delicious slice of pizza.

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of photographing my good friends Megan and Eddie out and about at popular spots around Austin. Megan wanted to do a non-traditional maternity shoot that was fun and included cool architectural elements.

What she wanted and what my style is match perfectly so I was more than happy to deliver. We had a great time braving the elements as we shot around the Blanton Museum, downtown Austin, and Bull Creek.

Austin Fashion Week 2009 wrapped about a week ago here in Austin, Texas. While Austin’s Fashion Week is not as big as the established Fashion Weeks in New York or LA, The arrival of a major fashion event here in Austin is reflective of the city’s growth and rise to a more prominent position on the world scene in recent years.

I took part in the inaugural fashion week by shooting backstage portraits for the Sew Sister and Friends show at Qua, which also included designers Mange la Mode and Cyberoptix Tie Lab. A couple of the notable models were Austin Fashion Week Model of the Year: Reader’s Choice Christian Ramirez, and NFL wide receiver Limas Sweed.

I shot a great portrait session with Beth (who also happens to be a photographer) a couple of weeks back. She was a great portrait subject, we got plenty of great shots, and we had a lot of fun shooting, so I wanted to share with all of you!

To highlight her beautiful teal prom dress (made by local designer Calyro), I chose to highlight it against the very modern architecture downtown. I thought that the perfect backdrop would be the one of the new iconic buildings that define Austin, the Long Center. With it’s swooping halo, sleek metal tiles, and downtown skyline views, the Long Center is a favorite portrait location in town.

In January of 2009, I participated in a Strobist photo shoot at the Go Dance Studio in Austin, Texas and had the pleasure of meeting a whole bunch of talented dancers. The Go Dance studio had beautiful bluish green walls that made the perfect backdrop for my studio portraits. I shot more than a dozen dancers over the course of a few hours and I had a blast.

I have been shooting breakdancers for years, so I was excited to capture that same excitement and sense of motion in a different form of dance. Both groups of dancers are passionate about what they and their love comes through in their body language and expressions express that while in the photos.
